About Julie
Julie Schiller
Endorsed / Registered Midwife
My name is Julie Schiller and I am pleased to announce my venture into Private Midwifery Practice in 2024.

My direction and passion for woman-centred care has been clear and evident throughout my midwifery career. I have taken many opportunities over the years to attend workshops, seminars, conferences and inservices to compliment my knowledge and skills and continue to offer evidence-based care.

I was fortunate to be guided and learn from experienced midwives offering care to women in a Birth Centre within a large interstate metropolitan tertiary hospital in 1983-1984. I witnessed women empowered to make informed decisions with a belief and trust in their bodies to birth with minimal interventions, and with the support of their birthing partners in a non-clinical, home-like environment.

As the Active Birth movement gained momentum in the 80’s so did Midwives progression to meet the request by women to be cared for by known care providers.

Returning to Adelaide I gained mainstream labour ward experience in a tertiary hospital. With my skillset and experience, I embraced the opportunity to progress to providing birth centre midwifery led care to women and their families for 10 years. For a further 15 years in Midwifery Group Practice I was fortunate to provide publicly funded home births from 2012 within the hospital’s maternity services, where I witnessed and enabled the proven positive outcomes for women and their families from midwifery care in their own environment. As a consumer myself in the 90’s, I consciously chose care providers with whom I could have continuity, to establish a trusted, respectful relationship and feel empowered and supported with my decision making to enhance my pregnancy birth and breastfeeding experiences. Evidence consistently shows that continuity of care by a known Midwife is the "Gold Standard" of maternity care for best outcomes of mothers and babies and yet access for most women is still limited in Australia.

For the past 2 years I have been preparing to become a Private Practice Midwife having successfully completed Prescribing for Midwives through Griffith University in 2023 along with having met the requirements and process to become an Endorsed Midwife. I have also gained further experience within a well-established Private Midwifery Practice in Melbourne, often visiting clients in the familiar streets and suburbs where I practiced as a student midwife 40 years ago! Locally I have been employed casually at a private hospital and a private obstetric and gynae practice.
My goal is to offer continuity of care for the entire pregnancy birth and postnatal period up to 6 weeks, within my scope of practice and in accordance with the Australian College of Midwives National Guidelines for Consultation & Referral.

I am an “empty nester” with my husband of many moons and live in the inner south region of Adelaide with both foothills and beaches nearby.

My work-life balance includes sharing time with family, being very grateful to have 3 children, now adults (co-parented with much support through many years of unpredictable on call midwifery life) and their partners. I am also "JuJu" to one gorgeous grandson. I welcome time spent with family and friends, walking our energetic ball obsessed Border Collie, fitting in Pilates and yoga weekly, beach walks and swimming - the use it or lose it stage of life! Cooking, travelling or planning to, attending Crows matches, cricket, listening to audio books and music together with attending live music and theatre.

I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the families I provide Midwifery care for and the honour and privilege to be present throughout significant life changing times and transition.
